If there is one year that marks a turning point for volunteerism worldwide, it is 2026. The United Nations General Assembly has officially proclaimed it the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, a historic recognition that coincides with the 25th anniversary of the first International Year of Volunteers (2001) and the 55th anniversary of the United Nations Volunteers program.

But what does this mean for businesses? And why should it matter to you if you lead a CSR, human resources, or sustainability department? The answer is clear: 2026 represents the perfect opportunity to position corporate volunteering as the cornerstone of your social impact strategy.

Why has the UN declared 2026 the Year of Volunteering?

Resolution A/RES/78/127, adopted on December 18, 2023, recognizes that volunteering is an essential means of addressing global challenges, promoting social cohesion, and responding to humanitarian crises. According to UN data, one in seven people worldwide participates in volunteer activities, representing approximately 14% of the global population.

This declaration is not merely symbolic. It seeks to drive concrete actions to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlight the role of volunteering in social transformation, encourage civic and corporate participation in solidarity initiatives, and strengthen the social fabric and intergenerational solidarity.

Corporate Volunteering in Spain: Key Facts You Should Know

The Voluntare 2025 Report, compiled with the participation of 236 organizations from Europe and Latin America, reveals unprecedented growth in corporate volunteering in recent years.

Seventy-seven percent of organizations engage more than 10% of their workforce in volunteer activities, compared to 29% ten years ago. In addition, 45% of companies manage to involve 20% of their employees—meaning one in five workers actively participates in charitable programs.

97% of companies now offer volunteer opportunities during work hours, 15 percentage points more than in 2015. 91% of programs have a specific budget, and 93.7% of organizations expect their volunteer programs to grow in the coming years.

Nationwide, volunteering engages 10.5% of the Spanish population, which equates to 4.4 million people over the age of 14 dedicating their time to charitable causes.

The Connection Between Corporate Volunteering, CSRD, and ESG

2026 is significant not only because of the UN declaration. It also marks a regulatory milestone: publicly traded SMEs will begin collecting data to comply with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which they must submit in 2027.

The CSRD requires companies to report on their social and environmental impact under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Corporate volunteering becomes a key indicator for demonstrating commitment to local communities, talent development and employee well-being policies, alignment with the SDGs, and responsible management of the social dimension of ESG.

Companies that already have structured and measurable volunteer programs will have a significant competitive advantage when reporting their non-financial performance.

Benefits of Corporate Volunteering for Your Company

Data from the Voluntare 2025 Report confirms what many organizations already suspected. From the company’s perspective, 98.3% report that it improves employee motivation, 91.5% say it helps them attract talent, and 70.7% report a stronger sense of belonging. It also enhances corporate reputation and facilitates ESG regulatory compliance.

For employees, 96% say it allows them to put their solidarity into practice. In addition, they develop soft skills such as empathy, teamwork, and creativity; experience a greater connection to the corporate purpose; and gain learning experiences outside their comfort zone.

Trends That Will Shape Corporate Volunteering in 2026

The report identifies three major trends for the immediate future of corporate volunteering.

Digitization and virtual volunteering: Driven by the pandemic, online volunteering is here to stay. Forty percent of companies worldwide have already integrated digital volunteering platforms that enable remote participation and real-time impact tracking.

Skills-based volunteering: Companies are increasingly committed to connecting their employees’ professional skills with social causes, maximizing the impact of every hour dedicated to volunteering.

Culture of partnerships: Collaboration with social organizations, local communities, and other companies is establishing itself as a key element for generating systemic impact and multiplying the results of each initiative.

How to Prepare Your Company for the Year of Volunteering

If your organization does not yet have a structured corporate volunteering program, 2026 is the perfect time to start. And if you already have one, this is your chance to take it to the next level.

Assess your current situation: analyze the volunteer activities you carry out and determine whether they align with your sustainability strategy and the SDGs your company prioritizes.

Define measurable goals: Set clear KPIs such as volunteer hours, number of participants, beneficiaries, and SDGs impacted. What isn’t measured can’t be improved or reported.

Digitize management: use technology platforms that allow you to coordinate activities, measure impact, and generate automatic reports for your sustainability reports and CSRD filings.

Partner with verified NGOs: collaborate with organizations that understand the real needs of the local community and can offer meaningful volunteer experiences for your employees.

Communicate internally: Involve senior management and use internal channels to encourage participation. 61% of companies already report high executive participation in their programs.

The Booming Market for Corporate Volunteering Platforms

It’s no coincidence that the corporate volunteer management platform sector is booming. The global market is estimated to reach $1.25 billion by 2026 and $2.78 billion by 2035, with an annual growth rate of 9.29%.

Companies are seeking technological solutions that allow them to centralize the management of activities and volunteers, automatically measure and report social impact, connect with verified NGOs and projects, and generate reports aligned with CSRD and ESG standards.

2026 is your moment to lead the change

The International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development is not just an institutional declaration. It is a call to action for companies, employees, and citizens who want to build a more just and sustainable world.

Organizations that seize this moment to professionalize their corporate volunteering, align it with the SDGs, and prepare for the requirements of the CSRD will be one step ahead in building a more sustainable business model—one that attracts talent and is connected to the needs of society.
